Hi friends, family and former colleagues! I am proud to announce my granddaughter, Lillie Austin has been chosen as the honoree for the 2019 March On for Brain Injury Walk in Rochester on Sept. 14.
Many of you may know Lillie who is now a fourth grader at North Street School. Some of you may have had the opportunity to work with Lillie at West Street or North Street but many of you may not know Lillie’s story.
Tragically at 9 months old, Lillie sustained a traumatic brain injury. She was taken to Golisano’s Children’s Hospital and spent several weeks in intensive care. At that time, her prognosis looked grim. Her parents were told she may not speak, walk, run or function as other typical children do. Lillie woke up from her coma and got stronger every day. Being the fighter that she is, Lillie has beat the odds and learned to do all the things she wasn’t expected to do and much, much more. With the help of Golisano Children’s Hospital, New York State Early Intervention Program, The Happiness House in Geneva, The Brain Injury Association of New York State, all of her teachers and therapists from Geneva Schools, and family and friends, Lillie has made a recovery that has been nothing short of a MIRACLE.
Lillie is a true example of strength, courage and determination. We are so proud of her unwavering spirit and all she has accomplished thus far. We cannot wait to see what her future holds!
